The iRobot Roomba i3+ is a great robot vacuum with a number smart features to make it easier to maintain. The automatic bin emptying feature is among the best features we've ever seen in a robot vacuum. It's great on both carpets and hard floors. It's also easy to set up and use, with the app guiding you step-by-step through the process. Its ability to restart where it left off in our tests is a great feature. It was able to do this for 77 minutes on one cleaning, before the battery died.
The i3+ EVO, unlike some of the other robot vacuums that we tested has a self-emptying bin that automatically dumps debris into an external dirt container on its charging base once it is fully filled. This helps reduce the need for hands-on maintenance and keeps the i3+ EVO from overfilling, however it still needs to be manually cleaned after each cleaning session. The i3+ EVO dustbin can hold 2.4L, which will last for four to five cleaning sessions.
This model, like the i7, uses cutting-edge floor-tracking sensors to create maps. It also allows you to navigate in neat rows. However, the i3+ EVO only stores one map, while the i7 can store multiple. The map of the i7 can be used to create virtual barriers and no-go zones, however, not the i3+ EVO.
The i3+ EVO is more effective of picking up surface debris in comparison to other robovacs we've reviewed, but it is not the best at cleaning edges and corners. It's also less gentle on furniture, despite being surprisingly quiet. It pulled chairs away from walls, and made some collisions with the sides of our test bed, and got stuck on cords and toys while testing.
2. Black & Decker Pro Q5
The Q5 Pro is an excellent option, whether you're expanding your collection of robot vacuums or just starting out. It has an elegant design, powerful navigation, and useful automation at a reasonable price. It's the most affordable pound-for-pound model currently available and even matches some of Roborock's much pricier models in a variety of ways.
This robot is fantastic in cleaning floors that are dirty and its avoidance technology helps it to steer away from furniture legs or other obstacles. It also does well on carpets and gets an excellent score in our tests of navigation. The only drawback is that it's noisier than other models and doesn't perform as well in our satisfaction of the owner and predicted reliability tests.
The Q5 Pro comes with a large dust container of 770ml. This means you won't need to empty it as frequently as other 2-in-1 robots. The Q5 Pro's 240 minute running time is also a lot when contrasted with other 2-in-1 robots we have tested. If the battery is empty it goes back to its dock and automatically recharges before continuing cleaning where it left off. It also comes with a spot cleaning mode that allows you to mop or clean a specific part of your floor. It can also be programmed manually to follow a certain path. This is great if you have narrow stairs or hallways. It did a decent job of cleaning carpets in our carpet cleaning evaluation however, it had trouble with thicker pile carpets and rugs. It is also able to automatically lift the mop pad when it encounters carpet, which is a fantastic feature if you want to avoid mopping your carpets.
